CBA Permission Slip – Grade 5 Field Trip to Riverbanks Zoo – March 2025

Dear parents of students in 5th grade,

Exciting news – we are heading to the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia on a field study trip!

Field Study Date: March 20, 2025

Class: Science/Animal Kingdom/Ciencias/Reino Animal

Lead teacher: Johana Diaz

Purpose:

As we study animal behavior and taxonomy in science, the main goal of this trip is to observe and learn about animals in their natural habitats.  Students will learn about ecosystems, animal behavior, and conservation by observing these wonderful creatures up close.

Students will see gorillas, bears, and lions and compare their lifestyles to Ivan’s, the confined gorilla, whose unique perspective we are reading about in The One and Only Ivan. The story of Ivan shows how friendship, empathy, and ecology are important through Ivan’s bond with Ruby, the young elephant, and his self-discovery after meeting her.

After visiting the zoo, students will brainstorm ideas for our final project, where they will share their findings and reflections.

Cost: $25/student

Details:

  • The cost includes tickets to the zoo and money to cover gas.
  • Students must wear the Field Study uniform (CBA mint-green t-shirt & khaki pants/shorts/skirt).
  • Students should bring a lunch, a labelled water bottle, and a notebook for taking notes. *Please do not order from Food for Thought for this day.
  • Students should not bring money nor any electronics; we will not be visiting the gift shop.

7:00am – Depart CBA
9:00am – Arrive at Riverbanks Zoo
9:30-2:00pm – Self Guided Tour
2:00pm – Depart Riverbanks Zoo

4:00pm – Arrive at CBA (**Teachers will send ETA update to parents via ClassDojo)

Transportation: CBA bus or chaperones’ personal vehicles, at CBA’s discretion
