At Charleston Bilingual Academy, the celebration of Christmas doesn’t end on December 25! This year, we embraced the rich traditions of the Spanish-speaking world by honoring “El Día de los Reyes” (Kings’ Day) traditionally celebrated on January 6, marking the culmination of the 12 days of Christmas.

During our first week back on campus, students enjoyed a special cultural treat—Rosca de Reyes! This sweet, crown-shaped bread symbolizes the Wise Men’s journey to find the baby King, and each Rosca contains a hidden figurine of baby Jesus. Excitement was in the air as students carefully bit into their Rosca to see if they would “find” Jesus, mirroring the Wise Men’s search.

Our first-grade students added to the celebration by reading stories about the biblical kings who traveled to give gifts to baby Jesus. These stories brought the tradition to life, helping our students connect the custom of “El Día de los Reyes” to its biblical roots.

This tradition, celebrated widely across the Spanish-speaking world, gave our students an immersive experience in intercultural learning, reminding us of the global unity in Christ’s birth. Did you know that similar customs are observed in French-speaking regions like New Orleans with the famous King Cake?

Through moments like these, we continue to cultivate Christ-centered, intercultural understanding, bringing the joy of the Gospel into every season. Let’s keep the celebration going!
